There’s no denying that waterproof mascara has its place in the world. From weddings, beach days and more, there are key moments in life when we absolutely do not want to be caught with black streaks running down our face. Yet on the flip side, most of us dread using waterproof makeup as removal can be difficult at best, and damaging at worst. Thankfully, we’ve come up with a few genius hacks that make waterproof mascara removal a breeze.
Step #1: Layer with a non-waterproof formula
This trick is so easy, you’ll be shocked you didn’t think of it yourself. Before going in with your waterproof mascara, prep lashes with a non-waterproof formula first. This way, your lashes are sealed from tears, water, and outside elements but makeup can still glide off more easily at the end of the day. Brilliant? We think so!
Step #2: Use an oil cleanser
Once you’re ready to remove your waterproof makeup, we recommend turning to a cleansing oil to start to break down the makeup (make sure to look for a formula that is safe for eyes, such as this one). While we normally tend to stay away from oil-based products as they can inhibit the effectiveness of other products (like RevitaLash® Advanced or RevitaBrow® Advanced), waterproof mascara requires a little bit more oomph in the makeup removal department. To start, wet face and coat lashes with your cleanser of choice, being careful to not get any in the eyes. Cleanse face as usual, allowing a little extra time for the product to sit on your lashes and break down product. Repeat the process once more, making sure not to pull or tug when washing it off.
Step #3: Finish with Micellar Water
Even with a double cleanse, you might find some mascara still clinging on for dear life. That’s where Micellar Water comes in. This miracle ingredient deserves a spot in every beauty routine, whether it includes waterproof makeup or not! To finish your removal process, fully saturate a cotton pad with a micellar water formula, like our Micellar Water Lash Wash. Hold and press the soaked cotton pad over your eyelid for 10-15 seconds, then wipe away softly. Repeat as needed until product is fully removed.
Tip: Micellar Water is great because it also removes leftover oils from the double cleanse step!
And that’s it! With a simple hack, a couple extra products and a little patience, you’ll be able to remove any waterproof formula without any added stress or damage. That being said, we still believe you should stick with traditional formulas on a daily basis and keep the waterproof ones around for special occasions. Our lashes deserve the best, and the easier it is to remove mascara, the happier your lashes will be!
